Jacksonville, FL (Oct. 12, 2010)- The increasing threat of
identity theft is often attributable to information obtained from paper
documents. It is a good practice to shred all documents no longer needed
- especially those with personal information.
Identity theft and credit/debit card fraud are expensive and exhausting crimes.
To help protect you and your family, we’ve teamed up to bring the
Jacksonville community a no cost records shredding event. Jacksonville
Chapter of ARMA, Community First Credit Union, Iron Mountain, and Shredding
Source, Inc. is hosting a Community Shred Day on October 19 from 10:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. at Community First’s Hodges Branch at 13808 Beach Boulevard,
Jacksonville, FL, 32224.
At least once per year, consider purging your files and shredding everything
that is no longer needed. Appropriate records retention and destruction
practices help prevent identify theft. Review recommended retention
guidelines with your accountant or attorney and purge your files. For
personal records retention, basic guidelines to consider include:
· ATM Receipts: Until you balance your bank
statement
· Bank Statements: If you are applying for a
mortgage, a three-month history will be needed; however, your bank has all your
records should you need them
· Credit Card Statements: Three months
· Electronic Data Files: Deleting files and formatting
hard drives doesn’t permanently remove files. Before donating, disposing, or recycling
a PC, remove the hard drive and physically destroy
· Home Insurance: Five years
· Home Repairs: Ten years
· Investment Documents: Three months of balance statements
and anytime you purchase new investments, retain until you sell the investment
and complete your annual taxes
· Medical Insurance: Five years from date of service
· Pay Stubs: Destroy unless you plan to apply for a
mortgage, as a few months are typically requested
· Tax Returns: Three years of returns and supporting tax
paperwork from the date of filing
· Utility Bills: Three months, unless you are
writing them off in which case retain for tax period
· Warranties: As long as you own the item or until the
warranty period expires
Bring boxes of credit card statements, old checks, tax returns, bank
statements, mail containing your address, or anything with your personal
information on it and anything a thief might use to steal your identity.
We’ll shred it at no cost to you!
While paper, file folders, paper clips, staples, rubber bands, and small binder
clips can be shredded, please do NOT bring cardboard, telephone books, hard
copy books, dry or wet trash, plastics or metal, or hazardous materials.
